Digital signal and image processing

Digital signal processing is an integral part of any modern measurement system today. This is particularly so when the signal is extremely noisy. This is inevitable the case with low frequency signals (like a blood pulse) hidden in the interior of a tooth. The DFG project ViPr for the detection of dental necrosis ViPr is a good example. Many algorithms are available for such signal processing (autocorrelation, Fourier transform etc.) but their implementation also requires much skill. Furthermore, a degree of analogue pre-processing is almost always needed.

Modern software such as National Instruments LabView is very helpful in this respect.

Image processing requires similar techniques but extended to two physical dimensions. Most projects in this direction are exclusively industrially sponsored.
