Detection of vitality in tooth pulpa

The DFG funded project ViPr deals with the detection of dental necrosis. There are number of ways of achieving this but few have reached a point where the results promise commercial reality. The ViPr project has achieved the detection of blood flow by careful analysis of an optical signal using a mixture of modern analog and digital electronics coupled with intensive digital signal processing.

However, exact positioning of the signal corresponding to blood flow in the tooth (and not through the gum) is more difficult. Research continues with the addition of ultrasound modulation to differentiate between signals and their origin.
